The Stachys `Lamb's Ear', Stachys byzantina, is known for its soft, fuzzy, silvery green foliage. `Lamb's Ear' has a plant height of 8" and a spread of 12-24" and blooms in mid-summer. (Lamb's Ear is not known for its flowering, but however its foliage.) It is useful in the border or as a ground cover. It will add texture and color in rock gardens and looks wonderful with Veronica `Goodness Grows', Tradescantia `Concord Grape' or other purple blooming perennials. | |
The Ceratostigma `Plumbago Leadwort', Ceratostigma plumbaginoides, is a beautiful, fast growing ground cover with dark oval green foliage, turning to dark blue in late summer and early fall. The small blue flowers make this ground cover more unusual than the rest because of its late blooming time. `Plumbago' works great at the front of the perennial border, shrub borders, rock gardens, or as an edging plant. It looks wonderful with Achillea `Moonshine' and Coreopsis `Moonbeam'. | |
The Ligularia `Othello Leopard Plant', Ligularia dentata, is a wonderful yellow-orange, daisy-like flower with huge leathery, toothed, heart-shaped, basal leaves. New leaves emerge purplish-red but turn to brownish-green. Blooming from July to August, `Ligularia Othello' has a plant height of 2' and a spread of 24-36". It must have moist soil and should never be allowed to dry out. Use Ligularia in group or mass plantings, woodland gardens, or along streams, ponds, pools or bog gardens. | |

The Clematis `Ernest Markham', Viticella x group, has dark red, magenta blooms that flower in July and range in height of 12-15' and has a spread of 3'. The foliage is dark green and makes a great contrast with the flower color. Clematis prefers full sun but will tolerate shade in the morning in a well-drained area. The tops of Clematis prefer full sun while their roots prefer a cool, shady area. It is best to heavily mulch the root zone to provide this cool, shady area. The Geum 'Mrs. Bradshaw`, Geum chiloense, produces lovely scarlet, semi-double flowers that are shaped like small roses. Its fresh green, fuzzy foliage makes it different from the rest. `Mrs. Bradshaw' needs full sun but can tolerate afternoon shade, in moist well-drained soil. It is a perfect addition to any cottage garden, makes a wonderful combination with bright yellows, gold's and true blues (like Delphiniums, Salvias), for borders and mass plantings and for cuttings. | |
The Hibiscus 'Torchy', is one of the darkest red flowering varieties in the Fleming series. It aslo has very thick ruffled flowers that make it somewhat unique. 'Torchy' stands 4' in height and has 3 lobed leaves that are light green and offer a very interesting contrast. It is best to plant this Hibiscus in a full sun area and it will tolerate most soil types. 'Torchy' looks wonderful with grasses, and as a background plant. | |
The Grass, 'Autumn Moor', Sesleria autumnalis, is very upright.This grass is a tough yet beautiful evergreen with vivid yellow green to almost chartreuse foliage. The attractive flowers grow up to 4" to 6" long, and emerge as purplish black upright spikes. The blades are held erect and become silvery white in late summer to fall. The lime green foliage is ideal for edging. A phenomenal grass to use as a large-scale groundcover, a filler in beds, or as an underplenting for shrubs and trees. | |
The Grass, 'Big Bluestem', Andropogon gerardii, is a native prairie grass. This grass is also called Turkey feet because the shape of the seed heads look like turkey feet. It is also called beard grass. The name big bluestem grass comes from the fact that this grass can grow to very big, 4 to 7 feet as a matter of fact. The hairy blades, which can get to be 12 inches long and 1/2 inch wide, will get a red tinge on the leaves as they get older, and turn bronze in the fall. Very attractive grass which works well as an accent plant or in mass plantings. | |
The Grass 'China Love Grass', Eragrostis sp., is a dense mounded grass with a handsome compact foliage. The beautiful, pinkish-red, airy flowers, from summer to fall, form a dense, cloud-like appearance over clumping, dwarf foliage. Place this grass in full sun. China Love grasses begin to bloom early. This fescue-like plant produces fluffy drifts of pinkish red flowers through summer. As the seed heads mature, they turn an enchanting shade of gold. |
