About 5 years ago we three planted knock-out rose bushes which have done well, especially last summer when they got HUGE (about 5.5 feet tall) and bloomed late into the Fall. All year we kept thinking “wow, I can’t believe how beautiful those bushes look!” We dead-headed on a regular basis, used rose fertilizer, and looked forward to seeing them again this year. However, it is now almost July and there is only new growth coming from the bottom – the old wood looks dead. While the new growth looks healthy enough (and has blooms), it’s not very tall yet and we are sure we had big, full bushes by this time last year. Further, although it appears we should have pruned down the old wood, we can’t remember ever doing that before; rather, it seemed like they always just came back to like and didn’t need pruned. It’s almost like someone switched our bushes with a different type of rose bush while we weren’t looking! Any ideas what’s happening? I know we’ve never cut them down in the offseason before, why hasn’t the old wood come back this time? Or have we just lost our minds?
