Topic: Planting English and old shrub roses

I am planting two beds of English and old shrub roses next Spring. Up until yesterday, my plan was to take David Austin's advice and plant them in sets of three, about 18 inches apart. Yesterday, I read an article that this approach is mistake for english roses in the US as they grow bigger here than in England and that there is greater risk of disease planting roses that close together. I live in Pittsburgh, PA, Zone 6. Any experiences or recommendations?

I am also planting two beds of English/Old Garden roses in the spring. When you say DA suggests planting groups of three, eighteen inches apart, do you mean the whole group of three is eighteen inches from the next group, or that the shrubs are eighteen inches apart within each group? Sorry! I'm a rose newcomer! I have read conflicting advice about how far apart to plant, and am looking forward to some experts responding to your question.
