Sounds like too much fertilzer to me. Also, it could be the type of fertlizer that you are using as well which may be promoting rapid growth of canes. If you are using any kind of pH acidifiers such as Epsom salts (magnesium sulphate) or aluminum sulphate, you should probably not do it because this also causes rapid cane growth, sacrificing adequate cell development to hold it up.
