    Direction of Pruning

I have a large 5foot rose bush that grows lots of long stems with 1-3 roses at each end. I like to cut the stems so I can put these roses in water. Is there a general rule for the direction of the prune cut? All I know is to cut at a diagonal but I dont know if it should be diagonal toward the bush or away from the bush..any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

I cut away from the bush, the distance from the leaf node to the top of the cut should be about 1/4 - 1/2 in. Here is a good article on cuts
