I have a Madama Alfred Carriere that is growing against a fence. It is growing much higher than I want it and is sending long shoots horrizontally outwards into the garden. Can I trim this rose as though it were a hedge to get it back to wher I want it to be?

I had a rose bush that was growing out of control last year. I pruned it during the growth season to reshape it, and it continued to bloom without any problems.
