how to winter over Morden rose

    Hello all,

I live in zone 3, northern alberta Canada. This area is new to me, so I'm unsure as to how to over winter my Morden rose. When I lived on the prairies where the winters were anywhere from -35 to -40 c. I would put a tomato cage over the rose and stuff it full of leaves and grass. In my new location, the winters so far seem to be -20 for a few weeks, then we get a chinook and it warms up to +5 and then freezes again. Lots of cold winds and snow cover is anyone's guess. My question is do I do the tomato cage thing again, or leave it to the elements. I paid $40 + for this rose, so I don't want to kill it. Suggestions anyone??

Yes, I would say to do the tomatoe cage. The freezing and thawing is bad for any plant, not just roses. Remember that if your rose is on its own roots, it will come back again in the spring. I think that some protection will always be better than none at all.

Have you heard of the Minnesota Tip for helping rose bushes make it through the winter? If so, how is this done?
