Louise Odier - some help with care

    Hi All,
I am a newbie to the site and to roses! I hope someone can offer me a little wisdom.

I have fallen in love with the Louise Odier rose and want to make sure my new plant makes it through the winter.  I live in zone 6 Massachusetts. I planted the L.O. rose June of 08 and over the summer she has has really grown. Infact, it was just a small little bush and when I returned from a week's vacation over the summer, I came home to 3 foot arching shoots!

I have spread mulch around the base of the plant, but is there anything I should do to protect those long shoots that are now 4' high?

Also, when I prune in the spring, shall I cut them down, so the plant is more rounded, rather than tall and pointy?

You can probably tell how new I am at this by my questions... but I'd rather ask than lose her!

Thanks for ANY info you'd be willing to share about my lovely new rose.
