    Is it a climber?

My wife has grown a rose up the front of our cottage, it is called Etoile De Hollande.
It has now grown to about 20 feet at its extremity, it has two beautiful deep red flowers at the moment.
Our problem is how should we look after it?, should we cut it back hard every year or can we just leave it to its own devices?

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

    Kind regards,

    Christopher.

Climbers do not require to be pruned each year. Unless you wish to reshape or redirect it's growth, or keep it within a certain heigth. Or if it had a rose disease, you would want to prune the diseases growth off.

    Re: Is it a climber?

This is from my Rose Book:

"This rose was a climbing sport of he bush variety that occurred in Holland at Leenders Nursery in 1931. Flowers are bright red, of 35-40 petals that open to show golden stamens. The scent is very strong and of true damask perfume. This probably accounts for its continual popularity. Growth is vigorous to 14-16 feet (4-5m), making 'Etoile de Hollande' a fine rose for training on a wall or fence. Repeat flowering is good and disease resistance is excellent for a red rose. Foliage is soft green and plentiful. Buds are pretty but open very quickly especially in warm weather. It is a good choice for planting near the house where its delicious perfume can be appreciated."
