    pruning

I live in southwestern pa. Last fall while preparing my perennials for the winter i pruned my rosebush. After everything i have read i realize this was not the thing to do. Now that spring is here i'm not seeing any new chutes, and some of the stems i cut are black. Is it too early to tell if my rose is going to live? The rose is a hybrid tea by the name of Moonstone. any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance dorothy

if you are seeing blackened stems it means that they are dead and should be pruned off. I would wait a little while longer before pronouncing your rose dead. It may be that you will still see a few shoots coming. However, in future, the time to prune is in the spring just as you see the buds breaking. In the fall one should only prune back those long canes that you think will break in winter snow and wind.
