    Pruning Newly Planted Bush?

Is there any truth to pruning the roses of a newly planted bush to allow for more nourishment and root growth?

I just planted a rose bush that has five newly formed roses. My next door neighbor told me I should remove the roses.

    Thanks for any advise.

    Re: Pruning Newly Planted Bush?

The reason behind pruning newly planted rose bushes is to force the rose to make new canes from as low down on the plant as possible. That way you should get more blooms and a more attractively shaped plant. Most rose bushes are already pruned quite low when you purchase them so there is no need to prune any further. I would not remove the five newly formed rose buds that you already have. Let them grow, but next season remember to prune down to at least half of the size of the bush (except if its a climber in which case you do not prune for the 1st three years other than for shape and dead or diseased wood.
