    Winter care of Rugosa Rose

    Good Morning,
I am looking for information on how to take my Rugosa Rose into winter. I live in Southern Nebraska, zone 5. This plant has been in the ground for two years and is about five foot tall with numerous canes. I am wondering if I should cut it closer to the ground to protect from winter winds. Any suggestions would be appreciated. NancyF

    Hi Nancy,
My suggestion is to leave your Rugosa alone in the fall & let it go thru the winter. Do your pruning in the spring---remove any (1) "dead, damaged or diseased" canes (2)remove any "crossing over" canes & (3)after the bush is 3 years old, do renewal pruning. One thing you can do in the fall is adjust your pH if you have alkaline soils---Rugosas are the least tolerant of alkaline soils---I don't know what you have in Nebraska but have heard that some of the plains states have this problem.

Yes, I would also do the pruning in the early spring. But if you are afraid of canes breaking during winter snows or storms, just tie them to a stake or to a part of your house if they are growing by the house.
