I have no idea what to do

Last year I moved into my boyfriends grandmothers (who is now dead) house. She planted alot of roses at sometime, I don'T know how old they are exactly, but I would guess 10 years, only based on her health, I have no idea about roses. Last year new roses came out alot and it seems to be so this year too. The roses are pink and pretty big. The bush stands 3' tall or so and we have 4 or 5 of them. And in the spring I remembered how pretty those were and bought some more small rose things they looked like stems with roots? Ok I know nothing about roses, I should have paid attention to what type the new ones are (I got different types also). But I have searched google today (also how I found this) on how to cut the roses. 1. for flowers around the house and 2. so that the roses stay healthy. But I am such an idiot when it comes to that stuff I don'T understand how to do it (too many big words) I am just afraid I will cut it and it will be wrong. So if someone could give me very simple directions on how to do these 2 things. I don'T want to hurt the roses. Thanks

Re: I have no idea what to do

I have also moved into an older home in Young County, TX, and have a dilemma concering roses. The previous resident allowed the rose bush outside to grow wildly for quite some time, and I would like some assistance as to how and when to prune and shape these roses. I am unsure as to genus and species considering that there are no roses per se, but this particular bush is approximately 8' tall and 6' wide (I did mention that it has grown wildly for some time). Please e-mail me with suggestions and helpful hints concering this rather large problem; my e-mail address is divakittyangel@yahoo.com. Thank you for your help.

Check out the pruning roses instructions on http://www.rosemagazine.com/pages/pruning.asp. The information is easy to understand and detailed. Typically you want to make sure that there is growth going outward so that the stems can get lots of sun. To accomplish this (after you have cut the rose bush in half), is by looking at each stem and cut where a leaf is pointed outward from the plant. Cut about 1/4 of an inch from this leaf and direct the cut to be parallel to the leaf. That's it. Also, look for free classes at your local nursery and take a picture of what you want to prune so you can get advice from an expert.
