    5 roses to a stem

A couple of my beautiful rose bushes produce 5 buds to a stem, with the center rose developing before the four surrounding it. What am I doing wrong? Is there some way to correct this situation so I have only one rose to a stem?

I'm not sure what type of roses you have, but my knockout roses also have these 5 buds too. So do my parade miniature roses. After the blooms fade I prune, by cutting stem back to the next 5 leaf stem, and your roses will keep on blooming.

Lady Di, I looked in one of my books on roses and Hybrid teas, are the roses that produce a single long stem rose. Are you sure that this is the roses that you bought? Hope that I was able to help.

I have about 75 rose bushes, and I can tell you that even Hybrid teas often have more than one bud per stem. Several buds on a stem are called a candleabra. You can keep them this way or disbud the side buds when they are small. This will make the cental bud larger . Or you can get rid or the central bud and leep the side ones. Its your choice. just pick the buds you dont want off with your finger!

Thank you so much for your replies. At least now I know I'm not alone in the 5-to-a-stem world. And I now have a name for them - candleabras. Thanks also for your tips on how to remedy them. Now that I have "candleabras", I may celebrate them for a while and deal with them gradually. Thank you both so much!!
